“What do you want for Christmas?”

It’s a common question that is asked leading into the holiday season. Often the answer involves material things such as a bike, a game, or the last “cool” thing that was advertised on television or the internet.

Sometimes, the answer goes a bit deeper with a wish for something that can’t be found in stores or bought with money. It’s a Christmas wish for something that would make our fears, anxiety, or pain go away.

That was the case for me when my fifth-grade teacher asked us to create a Christmas gift for a family member.

At first, I wasn’t sure what to make. I sat for a while, and then it came to me. I grabbed a piece of poster board, crayons, and magic markers and went to work on a poster that stated the biggest concern of my life at age 10: “I’m afraid you’re going to die.”

It was the last present opened that Christmas morning, but its effect has lasted a lifetime.

That’s the backdrop of my story which is included in Chicken Soup for the Soul: Christmas Is in the Air
